China's box-office revenues surged in 2017 after slowing sharply the preceding year Jeff Teague Pacers Jersey , as the world's second-largest movie market edges closer to overtaking the US.

Ticket revenue grew 13.45 percent to 55.9 billion yuan ($8.6 billion) on the mainland in 2017, more than triple 2016's growth rate, Xinhua news agency reported late Tuesday, citing data from the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television).

China's box-office grew just 3.7 percent in 2016, dramatically slower than 2015's 48 percent growth.

Over half of 2017's ticket revenue came from domestic films, with record breaking patriotic action blockbuster "Wolf Warrior 2" collecting 5.7 billion yuan, topping the year's box office list.

The American action thriller "The Fate of The Furious" came in second, with box-office revenue of 2.7 billion yuan.

International films -- most of which were made in the US -- grossed 25.8 billion yuan and accounted for 46 percent of 2017's total revenue, compared to 19 billion yuan and 42 percent in 2016.

Hollywood has a keen eye on China's potentially lucrative movie market, although the government strictly limits the number of foreign films that can be released in Chinese cinemas.

China also takes measures to help boost domestic films' performance, including limiting the screening of foreign films during peak seasons and rewarding cinemas for playing more domestic titles.

In December, authorities announced cinemas will be eligible for tax refunds if over 55 percent of their annual ticket sales come from Chinese films.

Chinese cinemas pay a five percent tax on gross box-office revenue to the country's cinema regulator for a "movie industry development special fund".

The number of Chinese cinemagoers rose 18 percent in 2017. Nearly 10,000 new screens were built, bringing the total number to 50,776, Xinhua said.

BEIJING, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- It was Albert Einstein who said, ""Anyone who never made a mistake, never tried anything new.""

The Communist Party of China (CPC) has thrown its weight behind officials who meet challenges head on and take reasonable, honest risks to secure reform and innovation, regardless of mistakes they may make.

The CPC embedded this new leniency in policy at the sixth plenary session of the 18th CPC Central Committee, last month. Focusing on strengthening the Party's disciplines, the key meeting also encouraged Party members to emerge from their comfort zones without fear. So long as their actions are rational, honest, and demonstrate strict adherence to the exemplary standards of behavior expected of CPC officials, they should have nothing to fear.

The CPC needs officials who have the guts to take on today's challenges and the confidence to seek new solutions to old problems.

Over-caution and idleness have no place in a Party with so much work still to do. When the CPC came to power, China was an agrarian backwater. Today, despite gloomy prospects for many developed countries, China remains a powerhouse of growth with an economy which is the envy of the world. But the mission is far from complete.

Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, the CPC Central Committee has been entirely open about the magnitude of the task it faces: the realization of socialist modernization and the great rejuvenation of the nation, typified by the two centenary goals set for 2021 and 2049.

China's success relies in the leadership of the CPC, and the CPC relies on the support of the people. Only through strict and transparent, internal governance can that support be guaranteed.

Many officials are now suffering a kind of administrative paralysis. Having lived and worked for years in an ambience of ostentation and idleness, many have no passion for new ideas. Many hesitate to innovate, or do anything at all, afraid of taking on challenges and fearful of making mistakes.

The anti-corruption campaign has had the specific intention of instilling fear in officials, fear of being corrupt, but has also dampened the enthusiasm of some for their work, worried that they may face punishment for mistakes.

As reformers have no experience and no reference points, mistakes will be made, especially by those with the greatest desire to bring about positive change. Those officials with an entrenched commitment to reform and innovation should be tolerated and encouraged. The intention to do good is vital; some mistakes, inevitable.

However, malpractice is malpractice and this new, more tolerant, approach leaves no room for intentional wrongdoing that goes against CPC decisions and regulations.

If the CPC is to continue to lead the march toward universal prosperity, then it must do so fearlessly.

BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhuanet) -- A 144-year-old lightship that once guided vessels to safety in the waterways around Shanghai yesterday made a poignant return to the city.

The “Yingkou” first arrived in Shanghai in 1896 and was put to work near the mouth of the Yangtze River. Later this year it will take pride of place at a special exhibition planned by the China Maritime Museum.

Before being presented to the public, the 32-meter-long, 8-meter-wide vessel will undergo a program of renovation, said Wang Jun, director of the museum’s cultural relics department.

“Repairs are needed to the deck and the light itself, but most of the vessel is still in good condition,” he said.

“The ‘Yingkou’ is a fine example of late-19th century shipbuilding and we will make sure we maintain its original appearance as best we can,” he said.

The 220-ton vessel was built in Britain in 1871, before sailing to China and spending most of its working life near Yingkou Port in northeast China’s Liaoning Province.

Lightships, as their name suggests, act as beacons for vessels in waters that are difficul.
